What is ASTM A105?
ASTM A105 is the specification for carbon steel forgings for piping applications — flanges, forged fittings, valves and similar parts for ambient and higher-temperature service. It is the default flange material for carbon steel lines that use ASTM A106 pipe and ASTM A234 WPB fittings. For low-temperature service the equivalent is ASTM A350 LF2.

How to write ASTM A105 on a purchase order
Name the product, size, material specification and grade, the dimensional standard and the certificate. An example line:

What to know before ordering to ASTM A105
The points that decide whether material to ASTM A105 is accepted at inspection.
- A105 flanges are the standard match for A106 B pipe.
- For low-temperature service use ASTM A350 LF2 instead.
- Normalising is required above certain pressure classes — check the specification edition.

How ASTM A105 fits into an order
A purchase order line is only complete when it names the material standard, the dimensional standard and the inspection document. Miss one and the mill, the inspector and the buyer can each read the order differently.
ASTM A105 — questions buyers ask
What is ASTM A105?
ASTM A105 is the specification for carbon steel forgings for piping applications — flanges, forged fittings, valves and similar parts for ambient and higher-temperature service. It is the default flange material for carbon steel lines that use ASTM A106 pipe and ASTM A234 WPB fittings. For low-temperature service the equivalent is ASTM A350 LF2.
What does A105N mean?
A105 supplied in the normalised condition. Normalising refines the grain and is required by A105 in some cases; many buyers specify it for all flanges.
What is the difference between A105 and A350 LF2?
Both are carbon steel forgings. LF2 is impact tested for low-temperature service (class 1 at −46 °C); A105 is not.
What is the difference between A105 and A182?
A105 is carbon steel. A182 covers stainless, duplex and Cr-Mo alloy forgings for corrosive or high-temperature service.
Which grades do you supply to ASTM A105?
ASTM A106 Gr B — see the table on this page for the exact product and designation.
Do you supply certificates to this standard?
Yes. Material is supplied with mill test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 showing the standard, grade and heat number; 3.2 with third-party inspection on request.
