What is ASTM A269?
ASTM A269 is the specification for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general corrosion-resisting and low- or high-temperature service. It is the usual specification for instrumentation, hydraulic and process tubing in 304L and 316L, ordered by outside diameter and wall. General requirements are in ASTM A1016. ASME adopts it as SA-269.

What to know before ordering to ASTM A269
The points that decide whether material to ASTM A269 is accepted at inspection.
- Sizes are given as OD and wall thickness, down to small instrumentation tubes.
- Hardness limits matter for compression-fitting tubing; specify them when needed.
- For pressure pipe, ASTM A312 is used instead.

Is A269 used for instrumentation tubing?
Yes — 316L tubing to A269 is the common choice for instrument and impulse lines.
Does A269 cover pipe?
No. Pipe sized by NPS and schedule is ordered to ASTM A312.
Which grades do you supply to ASTM A269?
SS 904L, SS 304, SS 304L, SS 316 / 316L — see the table on this page for the exact product and designation.
What is the current edition of ASTM A269?
The publisher's listing checked on 7 October 2026 shows A269/A269M-25 as the current edition. The edition that governs an order is the one named in the purchase order or design code. Full-text review of the current edition is in progress, so numerical requirements are not published on this page yet.
Do you supply certificates to this standard?
Yes. Material is supplied with mill test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 showing the standard, grade and heat number; 3.2 with third-party inspection on request.
