What is ASTM B409?
ASTM B409 is the specification for Ni-Fe-Cr alloy plate, sheet and strip — Alloy 800 (UNS N08800), 800H (N08810) and 800HT (N08811). The three differ in carbon range, heat treatment and grain size: 800H and 800HT are solution annealed with controlled carbon and a coarse grain for creep strength above about 600 °C. ASME adopts it as SB-409.

What to know before ordering to ASTM B409
The points that decide whether material to ASTM B409 is accepted at inspection.
- 800H and 800HT have controlled carbon and grain size for creep strength; plain 800 does not.
- Tri-certified 800/800H/800HT material is common when the heat meets all three.
- Choose 800H/HT for service above about 600 °C.

How ASTM B409 fits into an order
A purchase order line is only complete when it names the material standard, the dimensional standard and the inspection document. Miss one and the mill, the inspector and the buyer can each read the order differently.

ASTM B409 — questions buyers ask
What is ASTM B409?
ASTM B409 is the specification for Ni-Fe-Cr alloy plate, sheet and strip — Alloy 800 (UNS N08800), 800H (N08810) and 800HT (N08811). The three differ in carbon range, heat treatment and grain size: 800H and 800HT are solution annealed with controlled carbon and a coarse grain for creep strength above about 600 °C. Can one plate be certified 800H/800HT?
Yes, when chemistry and grain size meet both; dual certification is common.
Why does 800H need a coarse grain?
Coarser grains give better creep-rupture strength at high temperature, which is the reason to choose 800H over 800.
Which grades do you supply to ASTM B409?
Incoloy 800 / 800H / 800HT — see the table on this page for the exact product and designation.
What is the difference between ASTM B409 and ASME SB-409?
ASME SB-409 is the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Section II) adoption of ASTM B409. The technical requirements are usually identical to a specific ASTM edition; pressure-equipment codes call for the ASME designation, and most mill certificates show both.
Do you supply certificates to this standard?
Yes. Material is supplied with mill test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 showing the standard, grade and heat number; 3.2 with third-party inspection on request.
